A is for… Adaptability

Adaptability is the skill of being adaptable and managing change. Adaptability is about adapting yourself and your response to changes in circumstances and your environment and having a willingness to change. We have all adapted over the past year and some of us have coped better with this than others.

We all like to think we are adaptable. However, we often just sit within our comfort zones where it is safe and easy. However, to be more adaptable we need to stretch ourselves and focus more on pushing ourselves into our comfort zone.

However, we don’t want to unnecessarily push ourselves to far, which is why it is also important to focus on what we can control.

There are a number of simple things that you can do to help yourself be more adaptable and help manage your stress at the same time including:

  • Create a routine and structure to your day and understand how you approach things. Approaching issues with the right mindset can make you more adaptable and accepting of change.
  • Use a positive mindset to respond to the unexpected and any challenges.
  • Use and understand your comfort zone and stretch zone. Limit the amount of time you are spending in the panic zone so that you feel in control and feel like you can manage what you are working on or experiencing.
  • Focus on what you can control. Accept what you can’t control. Focus your energy within your control zone.
  • Ask yourself “how am I moving forward?” and “how can I create a workable situation for myself?
  • Remove yourself from negative experiences or situations and limit your news/social media consumption.
