An Introduction to Mindfulness

An introduction to Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a capability that can be developed with method, attitude, and relaxation. The aim when practicing mindfulness is not to get rid of thoughts, emotions, and sensations (a common misconception). Whatever is there is okay. Our brains are wired that way!

“Mindfulness simply means paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. This kind of awareness nurtures greater awareness, clarity, and acceptance of present moment reality. It wakes us up to the fact that our lives unfold only in moments.” J Kabat-Zinn

Mindfulness involves learning to settle your mind, follow your breath and relax. Mindfulness tools can be used anywhere at any time. This includes while sitting, standing, lying down, eating, walking, driving etc. You can also journal mindfully. There is no reason to be “too busy” to practice some mindfulness.

As well as helping you cope with stress and anxiety, practicing mindfulness can also help you:

  • become more productive and effective in the workplace,
  • improve your ability to process information.
  • make you happier and healthier
  • strengthen your immune system and improve emotional regulation.

Quick Mindfulness Exercise

Here is a simple Mindfulness Exercise that you can use to help you get started.
