C is for… Check-In

You should check in regularly with your boss in your first 90 days to ensure that you are getting face time with your boss and that you are “on track”. You might be required to check in as part of the appraisal process, but you should also schedule in some more informal check in as well when you have specific items to discuss.

However, it is not just your boss you need to check in with – it is also important to check in with other people in the business.

The people you need to know and that you need to check in with will depend on your role, what you are interested in and your ambitions. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Your Boss
  • Your Buddy
  • Your Mentor
  • Your HR Contact / Recruitment Manager
  • D&I representatives
  • Your Secretary / Assistant
  • Your Boss’s Boss
  • Senior people you would like to work with
  • Juniors who work for you
  • Your Peers
  • IT Manager/Trainer
  • Learning and Development Trainer

Action Point: Write a list of people you would like to “check in” with – and schedule a check in.

This blog post is an extract from our upcoming “First 90 Days” prompt journal which is being published later this year. You can pre-order your copy.

If you are dropping by as part of the A to Z Challenge – don’t forget to leave a comment to say hi with a link to your blog. Do you find check-ins worthwhile? Who do you schedule check-ins with? Share in the comments.

  1. Remembering what it’s like to start a new job makes me glad I’m not back in that position. Happy to be settled for a while. But those are great tips if you are starting a new position.
