Don’t waste your energy on things you can’t control

It is important to remember that a large part of managing your energy is to not waste too much energy on things that you can’t control. Here are some examples:

Define your success (and failures) by something that is within your control.

Define success (and failures) by something that is within your control. Not something that is the decision of someone else.

For example: If your success is “getting the job” that is not a decision that is yours. So you are relying on someone else and they are creating your “failure” if you don’t get the job and you are wasting energy stressing about it etc.

Your “success” should be in your control and in this scenario it would be proper interview planning and practice and doing the interview to the best of your ability. That is a success (even if you don’t get the job).

Don’t try to be the person you think other people want.

It is important to be yourself. Don’t conform, tell the truth, be yourself, don’t make assumptions about what the other person want or try and anticipate their reaction to you.

Don’t waste your energy (and time) on being the person you think others want you to be. It is draining to try and be someone you are not, and to keep up a pretence or image and eventually, it will crack. It is better to just be you. You should just be the best that you can be and do your work to the best of your ability. That is within your control.

Only try and control the controllable.
