End of Year Review

As part of your plan for progression, you should be carrying out an end of year review to assess where you are and what needs to be done. This should be both self-reflection and a conversation with your line manager/boss and perhaps even your mentor.

Questions to Ask Yourself

The questions you ask will depend on what you want to do and where you want to get to. Here are some examples of questions that you might like to ask:

  • What do you think went well this year?
  • How do you think you have progressed since 6 months ago?
  • What can I do to improve?
  • How can I be more helpful to others?
  • How have you achieved your goals?
  • What goals will you set next?
  • What new knowledge and skills do I need to develop?
  • Where could I be improving or strengthing my skillset?

Questions to Ask your Boss

The questions you ask will depend on what you want to do and where you want to get to. Here are some examples of questions that you might like to ask:

  • What do you think went well this year?
  • How do you think I have progressed since 6 months ago?
  • What can I do to improve?
  • How can I be more helpful to others (and you)?
  • Is there anything I can do to make your job easier?
  • How do you think I am performing?
  • What new knowledge and skills do I need to develop?
  • Where could I be improving or strengthing my skillset?
  • What do you think about my potential for progression?
  • What skills or capabilities would I need to demonstrate/develop if I wanted to get the promotion?

Once you have the opportunity to review your year (and had a conversation with your boss) you need to use this information to write (or update) your progression plan.
