F is for… Feedback
Ask for feedback. You should always be asking for feedback. However, this is even more crucial when you are looking for a Promotion.
Some bosses and colleagues are bad at giving feedback or some might only give feedback as part of the appraisal process. However, you should be actively seeking feedback all the time.
Feedback doesn’t have to be just from your boss. Seek feedback from clients and other colleagues that you are working with (and keep a record of it).
Ask things like:
- How am I doing?
- What needs done and what needs to be done better?
- Can you give me some specific examples of things you’d like to see me doing to improve my performance?
- What do you like about my working style / how we are working together? What do you not like?
- What can I do to help?
- How can I make things easier for you?
- How can I best support you?
- What can I do differently next time that will be more helpful?
- What could I do to improve?
- What steps can I take to prepare for the next project/next level?
- What skills do I need to demonstrate to show you can perform at the next level?
- How do you feel about my performance over the past couple of months? Am I on track for promotion? What else could I be doing?
Most importantly, ask about the promotion and what you need to do to be considered for a promotion.
If you are constantly seeking feedback and always looking to improve it will make it easier to self-evaluate your performance and improve and push yourself forward.
Action Point: Ask for Feedback and specific action points. Keep a record of it and don’t forget to implement it!
