It is always important to have goals. This is particularly important when you are working towards a Promotion. Your overarching goal may be to “get a promotion” but this is likely to be made up of a number of smaller goals that are designed to get you there.
Part of your Appraisal Process and any conversations that you have with your boss or manager will help you identify and discuss your goals – specifically goals that will help you get your promotion based on feedback, company requirements and any performance metrics or skills you need to demonstrate.
01 Set personal goals
Start by setting some of your own personal goals. You want the promotion, but why? What elements of the “promotion” role do you particularly want to do? What do you want to achieve?
02 Company Expectations (requirements)
Hopefully, you are clear about your companies expectations and have done your research about any specific requirements. However, if you haven’t already asked – ask your boss what they are expecting and any formal process/requirements that must be met. Understand the job description and any competency framework.
03 Company Goals
You will also be expected to and help your company meet its goals. Take the time to understand your place at your company as well as that of the promotion role. Understand the general corporate goals and mission and have a business plan for your promotion within the company based on your achieving specific objectives for your Company.
Taking the time to work out the company goals and align these with your own personal goals will help you make an impact (and make it easier on yourself). It will also improve your own job satisfaction as you will have clear in your mind what you want to achieve and when.
Action Point: Set your goals and review your existing goals.
