I is for… Indispensable
No employee is truly indispensable. However, if you are looking for a promotion you should seek to make a name for yourself and make yourself indispensable to the business by being perceived as indispensable (but be careful not to put yourself in a position where being “indispensable” (such as being tied to a role) which would potentially go against you when looking to move position).
Making a name for yourself and coming across as indispensable is partly communication (ie. communicating to those around you about what you are doing and your skills and attributes) and partly visibly showing your commitment to making a difference to your company, your team, the business.
Here are some ways you can do this:
- be a team player
- help others without expecting anything in return
- celebrate other people’s successes and lift them up
- acknowledge and appreciate those around you
- work hard
- go the extra mile
- have high standards
- be productive
- do what you say you will do
- meet deadlines
- be honest
- manage (and exceed) expectations
- add value
- be open to change
- push your boundaries
- never stop learning
- monopolise a particular skill or expertise
- do work that matters
- offer solutions
- be a trusted advisor or relationship contact
- stay current / up to date with industry trends
- develop your skills
