L is for… Learn all you can

One of the most important things you can do is to learn as much as possible. Learn as much as you can through training that your company offers to new joiners (or new managers). Learn from others around you. Learn from doing the job and pushing your boundaries and working outside your comfort zone.

  • be enthusiastic
  • take notes
  • ask questions (but not too many)
  • say yes to everything and demonstrate what you can do
  • bring solutions to the table – it doesn’t matter if they don’t work – participate
  • take your work seriously
  • be a team player

Remember the 70-20-10 rule:

  • 70% of your learning should come from work that stretches and challenges you.
  • 20% will be from other people around you.
  • 10% should be from training and courses.

As you are new you shouldn’t be afraid of asking for help. Asking for help from others or asking them to teach you/show you can nhelp you learn as well as build a deeper relationship with the individual. Most people are willing to teach and share their knowledge.

As well as learning how to do your job and improving your technical knowledge/expertise you should also be learning about the company. Socialising and networking can be a great way to learn about the company as you will get the inside scoop.

Action Point: Get to know your learning & development programme (if you have one) or write your own.

This blog post is an extract from our upcoming “First 90 Days” prompt journal which is being published later this year. You can pre-order your copy.

  1. Excellent post! Applies to situations outside of the workplace also. Learning is what keeps life interesting…
