L is for… Learning & Development Plan
You should always have a learning and development plan. No matter what stage you are in your career. It might be soft skills, technological skills, technical skills or skills required for the promotion you are hoping to get.
One of the most important things you can do is to learn as much as possible. Learn from others around you. Learn from doing the job and pushing your boundaries and working outside your comfort zone.
Remember the 70-20-10 rule:
- 70% of your learning should come from work that stretches and challenges you.
- 20% will be from other people around you.
- 10% should be from training and courses.
As well as learning skills and improving your technical knowledge/expertise you should also be learning about the company and business and keeping up to date with internal news and knowledge. Socialising and networking can be a great way to learn about the company as you will get the inside scoop.
Action Point: Create a learning & development programme with your boss/manager or write your own. Match it up to your goals and objectives and take into account any feedback you have been given.
